As you can hear on our latest podcast, dropped this morning (go to the podcast tab on this site,) your Trusty Sidekicks told you that an announcement was likely coming this morning and this morning it did come! In a massive buyout, Disney and Fox have agreed on a $52 billion deal for the Mouse House to take over the reigns on the entire film rights of 21st Century.
If you’re somehow unfamiliar to what this means (and honestly, if you’re reading this, I’m sure you are not,) Fox has had control over a number of Marvel comic book characters for a very long time, with the most obvious being the X-Men and Fantastic Four. With Disney’s acquisition, the potential to either spin currently successful and/or promising franchises like Deadpool, Legion, The New Mutants and The Gifted, into the current Marvel universe somehow, or to retool them along with other franchises that could possibly benefit from the awfully successful Marvel Studios touch.
There are some potential hold-ups in this deal as it would be the largest movie studio merger of all-time, and a reduction from what was already only 6 major studios. Large media mergers are always a subject of FCC approval, and considering the current ruling delivered today on net neutrality, there’s no telling how something like this might go. We also discuss some additional difficulties that Marvel itself may have regarding some of it’s new properties, on our latest episode (#74,) however, just like you, we’re already imagining who will end up fighting who when the eventual Secret Wars crossover happens! Are you excited about the merger? Tell us what you think!

In case you’ve forgotten, which, of course you haven’t – we get a new one of these every two years, whether they’re good or not – there is a new X-Men movie on the way. Despite the wealth of X-Men stories in the comics built around essentially the current team of cinematic characters, Simon Kinberg is going back to the Phoenix Saga to tell the story of Jean Grey and the X-Men in space, where they will face of with Jessica Chastain, this go-round.
Entertainment Weekly has a full story and pictures, explaining that Kinberg actually wrote the script for the previous cinematic attempt at telling the Dark Phoenix story, that one starring Famke Janssen as the titular hero gone nuclear. Bryan Singer, who was at the helm for the last two X-Men films, is sitting this one out as Kinberg takes over directing duties, and considering Singer’s recent issues and stories of previous problems coming to light, that may mean good things. Check out EW for the full breakdown, and check back with us for more breaking info across the Marvel and DC universes!
The Brazilian CCXP (Comic-Con Experience) is set to kick off and we are already getting a ton of new info. First up, are these banners for the new Tom Hardy-led, Venom movie. Rumors have reported that Hardy may be playing the no legs, bio suit, Flash Thompson version of the character, which makes the use of the symbiote looking mask a little questionable, but what about this production, other than the very capable actors cast, hasn’t been? We’ll keep reporting more as the day goes on, but be sure to check out our latest podcast for all your updates on what’s going on in the Marvel and DC live-action universes!

The waiting and wondering is finally over as Marvel dropped the first official trailer for Avengers: Infinity War. Bringing together the entire cast of heroes (and some villains) that we’ve seen over the course of the last 10 years of Marvel releases, Infinity War is set to deliver a showdown with Thanos, whom we initially saw briefly at the end of the first Avengers movie.
While the trailer has some changes from the leaked one from Comic-Con, a lot of the scenes have carried over, and I’m fine with that, as I’d prefer just enough information to wet my beak. Some of the highlights to note for sure are that Bruce Banner is back on earth and in Dr. Strange’s Sanctum Santorum, Spider-Man will end up trying to take on Thanos one-on-one, Loki apparently plays a part in trying to steal the mind stone from Vision (at least that looked like his scepter,) and of course, Captain America is back, front and center before this is over. Overall the trailer just looks clean and crisp and foretelling of an amazing story. Can’t wait to talk about this one on the podcast. Hit us up with your thoughts!
