As of this posting earlier it was learned that Bryan Singer will be removed as Executive Producer of the newly renewed Fox show “The Gifted”, it is now being reported that he will now be removed from FX’s Legion as well.
The news comes before work starts on season two but the twist here is that Singer is the one who asked to be removed. “Bryan asked to take his name off the show, so we have done that,” Legion creator/executive producer Noah Hawley said after a TCA panel for the series earlier today. It is said that Singer himself reached out to FX once a new wave of sexual misconduct and assault claims began to surface and he did not want to be a distraction to the production and success of the shows.
“Very early on in the conception of the show, I met him a couple of times,” Hawley explains. “He was interested in directing the pilot, but once I stepped in to direct, I haven’t spoken to him since that moment. Really, he was a name on the screen.” This may finally be the end of having Singer attached to the X-men franchise with these announcements and now Simon Kinsberg taking the reigns of X-men films.

As you can hear on our latest podcast, dropped this morning (go to the podcast tab on this site,) your Trusty Sidekicks told you that an announcement was likely coming this morning and this morning it did come! In a massive buyout, Disney and Fox have agreed on a $52 billion deal for the Mouse House to take over the reigns on the entire film rights of 21st Century.
If you’re somehow unfamiliar to what this means (and honestly, if you’re reading this, I’m sure you are not,) Fox has had control over a number of Marvel comic book characters for a very long time, with the most obvious being the X-Men and Fantastic Four. With Disney’s acquisition, the potential to either spin currently successful and/or promising franchises like Deadpool, Legion, The New Mutants and The Gifted, into the current Marvel universe somehow, or to retool them along with other franchises that could possibly benefit from the awfully successful Marvel Studios touch.
There are some potential hold-ups in this deal as it would be the largest movie studio merger of all-time, and a reduction from what was already only 6 major studios. Large media mergers are always a subject of FCC approval, and considering the current ruling delivered today on net neutrality, there’s no telling how something like this might go. We also discuss some additional difficulties that Marvel itself may have regarding some of it’s new properties, on our latest episode (#74,) however, just like you, we’re already imagining who will end up fighting who when the eventual Secret Wars crossover happens! Are you excited about the merger? Tell us what you think!

See all the characters in the blue picture? Those characters are Marvel comic book characters who’s live-action versions are currently under control of 21st Century Fox, meaning the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the universe that is currently in the midst of the greatest run of intertwined filmmaking ever created has not had access to the Fantastic Four, the X-Men or even the word, ‘mutant.’
Well, that may be about to change as CNBC reported this morning that 21st Century Fox is in the midst of very serious talks to sell it’s film and television business to Disney, the parent of Marvel Studios and the aforementioned, MCU. While there is no certainty that there will be a deal, and even if there was, it would take quite a while to fully complete. The senior management of Fox is apparently interested in tightening the companies focus on news and sports.
Such a merger would not include any of Fox’s actual networks, as Disney already owns ABC, and owning two networks is a no-no, but with characters like Legion and shows like The Gifted, as well as Deadpool, Wolverine, the entire X-Men universe and the Fantastic Four (meaning Dr Doom and Galactus,) actually owning the Fox television networks wouldn’t even matter. Of course, if you’ve listened to our swapcasts with Thom Tran, you’ll know that a FF appearance in Avengers 3 or 4 means Jay and I have to dress up like Eddie Murphy from Raw and Delirious, respectively, and re-enact each entire special. Looks like we’ve got the opening story for our next podcast! Make sure you don’t miss Episode 71, dropping soon!
