Today, we get the first trailer from Sony’s new Venom movie, starring Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams. As it’s only a teaser, we don’t get to see the symbiote in full action mode, but we get a healthy dose of Hardy as Eddie Brock, and at least a peek at the sentient black blob that will consume him. We’re sure to see more soon, as this is expected for an October 5th release, but for now, tell us what you think of the teaser!
For months, your Trusty Sidekicks have been bemoaning Sony for running out an ill-advised Venom movie on their own, off the back of Spidey being shifted to the larger MCU through a partnership with Disney. On our latest podcast (which you can catch the latest of here,) we even lament what we thought was causing this move by Sony, to flood us with Spiderverse characters out of defensive pride over giving up the storytelling reigns on their main Marvel character.
Not so much today. News has come out that Tom Holland has been shuttled from the Avengers: Infinity War set, to the Venom set, both filming in Georgia, for 2 days as Peter Parker in the Tom Hardy led Venom movie. Not only that, but rumor has it that the Carnage pic Tom Hardy leaked is actually indicative of the fact that Cletus Kasady will be the villain of the film, and will be the source of the additional symbiotes.
As it turns out, it’s very likely Feige and the Disney MCU team has been more involved with what’s going on in the Spiderverse than they wanted to let on. In fact, some of you may recall the Feige/Amy Pascal interview in which Pascal suggested as much, leading to one of the most hilarious Marvel press junket gifs of all time, the “Feige WTF” react (video below.) If it turns out, Feige and the MCU are parenting the entire Spiderverse, and it’s not just macho pride producing from Sony, it definitely changes our expectations for the success of not only Venom, but the upcoming Silver & Black as well. Does this change anything for you? Let us know!
