When the person responsible for helming the team-ups of the two major comic book live-action universes isn’t available, you go get the next best thing. Fox has made a huge splash by tabbing Drew Goddard as the writer and director of their upcoming X-Force movie. If you’re unfamiliar with Goddard, where have you been? He has been the underrated writing and producing teammate of Joss Whedon for years. The two worked on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel and Alias, where Goddard was a writer, as well as Cabin In The Woods, his directorial debut under Whedon’s steady hand as producer.
Other than that, what has Goddard been up to? Oh, just penning the original Cloverfield, World War Z and the Martian, as well as episodes of Lost, Daredevil and the Defenders, meaning he’s also spent plenty of time with JJ Abrams. He was also the executive producer of both Daredevil and Defenders, as well as the NBC hit, The Good Place. In other words, you should start getting pretty confident about the success of X-Force.
To prove he’s the person for the job, Goddard already has the script for X-Force completed and will be ready to go into production at the completion of his current gig, Bad Times at the El Royale, which he’s also writing and directing. Fox hasn’t set a date for the film yet, but has open spots announced for late winter, mid summer and late fall in 2019 and ’20. Look for it to land in there somewhere. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this pick and what it means for Fox and X-Force!
